How to use the med kit in Bad Company 2

I have been annoyed so many times in this game trying to figure out what button to press to pick up a dropped med kit... many times dying in the process. The answer is pathetically simple, you don't have to press any buttons. All you have to do is stand next to it, above it, or just relatively close and it will slowly heal you. I wish they would have made the effects more obvious considering you never see your soldier pick it up.

When looking this up I have heard that if you're an engineer you can drop these (or have an engineer do it for you) and if you get shot you will take noticeably less damage due to the fast healing.
