to start off in war3 i strongly suggest going through the campaigns just to get a feel for the races and then you can choose the race you will be sticking with.
play a couple of 3v3 games against computers until you feel comfortable.

Ya, not only is the tinker rigged, the whole thing is rigged. Me and Pan just won 5 times in a row with our necro strategy. IT IS GOING TO GET NERFED SO BAD!

AND I USED TINKER TO CREEP ALL BY HIMSELF! YAY!

We just won another time. Bringing our record to 6-0. We are 120th on the ladder...and proud of it. =)

Gryos are the best for attacking air
Footmen > Knights
Gryphon Riders can attack spell immune units
Heroes suck balls, don't use them
