How do They do it?

How do people manage to lag on Broodwar (Battle.net)? It's just beyond me. I'm on a six year old (or so) computer, running on a 56k modem yet I never lag. Ever. But then I see people who claim to be on a "DSL" or "Cable" but lag up a storm every game.

Please explain it to me.

I know some of it has to do with how the computer handles the game. StarCraft takes advantage of computer resources and usually takes up moer RAM than it really needs. This can cause StarCraft to be daft and have trouble sending and reciving information at the correct speed, it's a bit a dumb. :p This isn't much of a big factor though. I don't know where the majority of StarCraft lag comes from.

[glow=black]That's usually true. You always see it on War3. It'll lag up when people get messages on AIM, or are running other programs. However, if you run the game without any other processes, it'll be extremely smooth. Starcraft requires very little resources (But you're right that it does make the most of them. ;) ) [/glow]

People with AOL have to have their window open if they want to be/stay connected to the internet. The extra window will ad major lagg, even if they are on DSL.

Happened many times to me when we had AOL.

Most of the time it depends on what processes they use. However, anytime I load up WC2Bnet, I lag like hell. Pretty much any other game doesn't lag. So it's got something to do with the ports you use too.

Alright, thanks for the info. Could it also possibly be router problems?

Yes, in some cases you need to forward the ports used for SC, especially if you're behind a firewall.

I agree, then again most dial-up is heavily underestimated when it comes to playability on Battle.net (Broodwar). In fact I don't seem to have ever genuinely lagging. Ever.

I only lagged if i had chat programs open. It was StarCraft or nothing. That, or the UMS maps had about 300000 things happening at once.

I lag on WC3/TFT only if the host is laggy. Yes, i'm still running a 56k.
