I think that this should be stickied because it contains useful info... this guide should give u about 60-100 fps if u have decent hardware.
custom.hpk
The more You play the slower You will connect. Suddenly it is not possible even to play the pistol-round and then You reinstall Your CS ?
This file contains all the spraylogos You might have downloaded while playing CS. You dont need this "spraylogo-bank" - just delete it once in a while (CS is creating an empty new when its missing) !
The file is loacated here: ../cstrike/custom.hpk and now its allmost like a reinstalled CS =)
A good idea is to make the file write-protected after CS has recreated it.
Then it wont grow BIG again because You will loose other players spraylogos when leaving the server ...
16 bit colors
CS was meant to be played in 16 bit colors and if You want to reach max. FPS (Frames Per Second) You have to force Your graphiccard into that mode. Its done in Your display properties.
Antialiasing
This makes Your game look better - but it decreases You FPS: turn it off right now ! Its done in Your display properties.
Vertical Sync
This makes Your game look better - but it decreases You FPS: turn it off right now ! Its done in Your display properties.
OpenGL mode
Remember to run You game in OpenGL mode - Direct3D- and Software mode is something You should forget all about ! Its done in Your Ingame options.
Client vars in Your config.cfg
Open Your config.cfg with notepad, its located here: ../cstrike/config.cfg and change/ add these vars:
r_mmx 1 - MMX support
cl_lc 0 - new netcode
cl_lw 0 - new netcode
cl_updaterate 50 - new netcode
hud_fastswitch 1 - fast switch between weapons
gl_ztrick 1 - if You have 3DFX
fastsprites <"0"| "1" |" 2"> - smokegrenade complexitivity
r_shadows 1
rate <> 56k = 5000, 64 ISDN = 6500 & 128 ISDN = 8000
pushlatency <> ping 60 & -30 & ping 200 = -100
fps_modem 120
fps_max 100
Important: remember to make a backup of Your original config.cfg and change only one thing at time !
CS shortcut
If You connect to CS from a shortcut Your target should be used with these values:
..\Half-Life\hl.exe -game cstrike -noipx -numericping -nojoy -zone 4096 -heapsize 200000
If You are using GameSpy simply add the same parameters to Games And Filters !

GameSpy
This is the ultimate connecting tool. It will show You who is online and it have a buddylist and much more.
The best thing about Gamespy is that if You accidently push <CTRL+TAB> or <WIN-KEY> it will give You back the ingame sound - just remember:
when You come back to Counter Strike push <ESCAPE> two times !
