yes you can get banned for Maphack use, there are many ways to detect it... very easy ones that could be added to the game code with a silent patch. Ever look at those D######.log files in your d2 directory? They just happen to list everything that was running and maphack and everything else is clearly listed in there. All they need to do is just add code that looks for a program named "d2maphack" and boom they got you. I'm not sure on the legality of that, as it might be a invasion of privacy which might expain why it hasn't been done yet.
