It's good to play based on guides, but it's even better to try exploring the race yourself. Learn using the tech tree, and discover what each unit is able to do.
Other than using guides, watch a lot of tournament videos on Youtube. Watch how they play and how they adapt to different situations. RTS games are easy to learn, but hard to master. I totally feel you.
