What was so great about KotOR?

I downloaded it awhile back and I dont really see any reason it was given game of the year. Perhaps I'm just missing something.

I downloaded the second and it was way too damn buggy, most bugs werent even fixed in the patch. Not to mention the broken quests, the lack of a good ending, the grainy movies, and way too easy.

I'm not too sure. Maybe it was because there were 0 good RPGs that year. 0 good games if it was Best Game of the year, and not Best RPG. I personally thought they wern't that great. The gameplay was mediocre, the storyline was shitty, and the character development was lacking.

It's probably because they decided to use the d20 rolling system for character statistics and whatnot. Giving people from games like BG1&2, and NWN a sense of relativity. It drew a larger player base in, because of the way character management was handled.
