What is a WoW guild?

Im not shure if this is the right place to post this and I know its a n00b question but:

In Wow What is a guild? i know that you need nine people to "make" one but im not shure what they do... please help or feel free to flame me form my n00bism

Yes, it's like a group of people, almost idenical to a clan, but also different. Possibly more in-depth with rankings and the system in which you run the guild, I beleive.

a guild in WoW is like a clan. there is a guild master that leads the whole thing. the guild master can appoint officers, that act like recruiters. below officeres there are veterans, then members, and initiates on the bottom. guilds are very useful for groups and helping eachother. it costs 10 silver to get a charter, then you need 9 signatures to make the guild official. after that you can invite more and more people. guilds even have their own chat.
