Mortars are better in almsot everyway...
1. alot more range...
2. does about 5 more damage (average)
3. can attack units
4. can use flare
And they both cost about the same. I dont see the point of using steamtanks at all, if they could attack units that might tie them up but...they cant.

Steam tanks can be repaired, have high life, can attack and kill mass amounts of air. Great for taking out halls then retreating.

TFT > flak cannos upgrade

Tanks are more imposing than mortars so they are targeted quicker and easier, and being able to stay alive longer means a betetr chance at destroing buildings and such.

morts are like scout demolishers, and they can kill mass ammounts of low hp people when ff. but tanks are like a demolisher combined with an anti air, they can also withstand all kinds of attacks....... mainy they are used for either tower buildups and killing expansions. if ur base killing while the enemy is away they dont have to run like morts do

pretty mush sums it up. all mortar are good for is the innvisable mortar strat. or for a fast take out hall and run.

Unless you are facing 32429348 gargoyles, hippo riders or wyverns, Tanks should probably be the LAST option for anti air. Why is this? First, tank rockets are bunches of small clusters which hit one unit a piece. Second, that upgrade does take a while. Finally tanks come tier 3, when those kinds of air come tier 2.

Then there's gyros, but other than for scouting and antiair, they don't have much use. They do terrible land damage and they die fairly easily.

The best option is just to stick with regular rifles, upgrade their range and damage. They have a lot of hp and they do a good deal of damage. They also come out of the barracks, so they are versatile.

unless you use the tele seige engine strat. where u mass seige engines and send invisable peasants (use sorceress ability) in to enemy base, then you tele you and all you siege engines into enemy base with lvl 6 archmage. thats pure gg.

barrage is a seperate upgrade from flak cannons...... barrage is the upgrade with the colorful stars wich allows u to attack i think 9 air units...... flak cannons allows gnome flying machines attack air with splash damage

I really can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet...

But Siege Engines are very often used in the HU mass tower abuse strat. They have high HP, fortified armor, siege damage, can completly pwn air, and worst of all they give the xp of a ghoul?!?! Like wtf?! And actually, they are used all the time actually. HU mass towers with masonry upgrades...like 8-9 towers at his main, 10-13 towers at additional xpos...and then they freely can tech to mass steam tanks & gyros, or mass steam tanks & grifs or knights or whatever as they hide behind towers at any sort of confrontation what so ever...and then the HU just sends wave after wave of tanks to the enemy base taking out zigs, goldmines, town halls, whatever....works best on lost temple, cause of fast xpand and because you can mass towers at xpo so easily. It's basically called the "HU Mass Towers" strat and it's ****ing imba...even Grubby mentioned it in one this one interview cause he lost to it...not to mention Spirit_Moon lost to it during some big tourney on LT vs Rainbow...its ****ing rediculus once HU gets enough towers which makes the base basically untouchable...mix that with mass ****ing tanks which are hard enough to kill, and are taking out all your destros or gargs, or hippos, or whatever air...so you counter the tanks with either siege which die instantly to anything else but the tanks, or melee like ghouls or abombs, which die instantly to the few grifs that are with the tanks...not too hard to adapt for the HU, mass tanks will pwn air, a few grifs will pwn ground...with one or more xpo (which is protected by mass towers), the HU can easily mass whatever....

So ya in general, steam tanks are used in the base race...HU base = mass massonry upgraded, cheap ass, fast building towers....everyone else's base = pwned by take-forever-to-kill-siege-engines....
