Brushes are for stupid newbs.

False. The closest thing to a sufficient word to put in place of brushes in order to make that true is filters.

Filters have their use - but are not intended to create images...

Brushes have their uses (though I don't generally enjoy an image which makes excessive use of brushes created by someone else).

Then again - the dominant use of brushes in ITDSLA is brushwork. (whoever properly guesses what ITDSLA stands for deserves 10 cookies...)
