with some luck we could get the admin to shell out some prizes or what not. Anyway here is how it goes

You create up to two layouts and post a link to them, it could be just a jpg of how it would look or actual html, html getting the bigger prize, and we vote after all entries are in. Winner gets maybe posts added or custom title or something.

I'll start us off i guess

www.akulesworld.com/index2.html

www.akulesworld.com/layout2.html

go ahead and try to rip my pictures.

Haha.
*Opens Temporary Internet Files*
*Finds Akules Pictures*

*Throws them in Recycle Bin*

The only way to stop people from stealing your pictures it to watermark them. Which is exactly why you wouldnt make the actual html site for a contest like this, but just a jpg.

I find it hilarious that the script doesn't work in a web browser... (and to be precise, MSIE is not a web browser - it is an outdated html renderer with very poor standards compliance.)

So that's why I didn't notice it doing anything?

And sort of off-topic: is there a shortcut key to open a web location in Firebird? I would use it if there were.

Well, you did tell us to rip the pictures.

Since I'm such a nice guy though, I decided to try to rip your pictures in IE to be fair. Yeah. That was also easy. :)

...most people aren't running KDE, or *nix for that matter...

I still prefer using Mozilla Firebird most of the time anyway, and it has nothing to do with the fact that I use gnome.

Anyway, the most important thing to get across is that *>MSIE

It looks like an art or gfx site, that isn't a layout you would use for a buisness, and beings so as it is, it is damn sexy punk.

what a site is for doesn't change how good or bad it looks overall, though, IMO - too overdone, and everything is massive...at high resolutions. (referring to layout2)

Also, being an art site is no excuse for a poor layout - the first is ok in that area, but the second has too much space taken up, and not enough room for standard content. Functionality over form remains true over any site which intends to display content - in the case of an art site of some sort - form is important, but functionality still is more important.

"Aqua", simple tentacles, and simple high-contrast gradient style metal are some of the most overdone things when beginners start creating a template. (they're simple to do, and look kind of cool...in moderation

On the note of technique - try making things softer in general - such as longer, less severe gradients/bevels. And if you want things to stand out - drop shadows work nicely, so long as they aren't too dark. (drop shadows - one more reason MSIE is crap - it neglects one of the most important features of PNG - alpha transparency, one of the many things that would make a designer's life much easier, for instance, in creating images with drop shadows...)

If you disagree, meh - just trying to recommend some ways to improve. Do more, and I'm sure you'll improve.

Ripping the pictures is as easy popping up the source and finding where the pictures are located, and then following the path to them... for example: http://www.akulesworld.com/images/layout2_01.jpg was found by this piece of HTML:

Code:
<IMG SRC="images/layout2_01.jpg" WIDTH=600 HEIGHT=462 ALT="">
pat hit a nail on the head, although design is important and it is what brings people in, a site's functionality and content is what keeps them there.

First off you wouldnt know the first thing about 'hacking', and I hardly consider saving a web image hacking. Second, you didnt even make that image, its from robouk or some tutorial site.

*Its from purephotoshop.com
