there are many ways to fade the edges of an image...

simplest being to just take an eraser with the right brush and take off what you don't want of the layer...

This might be better explained on my website, but basically you just create a mask for the layer you want to fade (button near the new layer button) and then you can use the grad tool for a nice even blend. I don't use the eraser because I can always go back and mess with a mask if I don't like it, erasing is perminent when it's off your history.

I was going for the simplest method...due to the unfortunate truth that many people know only how to use the basic tools and filters.

Layer masks = the seksi. But when I try to save the image, it wont let me gradient fade into complete transparency :(

What's this about saving? If you want full to no transparency, then use 100% black for your foreground and 100% white for your background when you use the grad tool.

A small shack with Photoshop 7.0 *drool*
Use a layer mask...layer mask basically puts a mask over the layer...

Whatever is white in the layer mask is at 100% opacity...whatever is black is 0%...IN THE LAYER MASK...use a gradient...

Don't expect to go very far without layer masks...

There are a hundred different ways to implement layer masks. I use em in almost every one of my pictures. Try putting a picture in a layer mask with some contrast changes maybe...that's always a nice addition to trendwhore...

Oh and the reason you can't do something completely transparent is probably because you're saving as a jpeg...

Only gifs and pdfs support transparant...

Unfortunately, pdfs can't be uploaded into servers and then displayed...it just doesn't make sense unless you expect everyone to own a copy of photoshop :p

PNG's support ALPHA transparency.

Unfortunately, they are only really supported by the decent browsers, like Mozilla...not the one almost everyone uses - IE...

I see what you were tying to go for tweak, but do what pat said and save with alpha transparency.

So true... so very... very true!

Godamnit, that puts it over 100kb over the sig limit. My new sig accidently made that effect... And it looks like shit without it. Any way to compress?
