Indeed , the change they did for 1.17 for defend makes them stronger and having defend is better vs grunts. However a FS with chain lightning will leave footmen to few hit points because their hp are the same and damage too. Rifles still have better damage and hps, so you just need some foots for meat shield. You can try with footmen vs grunts and again footmen will be free experience.
If he techs to wyverns, defend will work wonders, and the rifles help. If he just gets grunts, the footies will be shield while you use rifles. Wait, forgot about the casters. Slow owns the grunts, and spell breakers can't die to CL. I dunno, try it out. HU can already beat orc the way it is. :O!
DHawks own the wyverns, and the grunts can't attack them. Mix in footies with defend to reflect some of the wyverns shots, rifles, and slow the grunts will die along with the wyverns.
