StarForge's new protection method can not be unprotected by "hex illiterates". I think I know a way to protect a map from being read correctly but functionable by StarCraft. I haven't bothered testing it due to my busy life...

I have the SC Unprotect program, and all I will say is that some people (like me), open the maps to see how the creator crafted his work.

If someone wants to go through all of this crap to unprotect a map then go ahead! Be a newbie. But it's a lot easier just to get help on something here, unless you want to unprotect it to get credit. That's major newb style.

I don't want to download Bolt's HouseoftheHaunted map for the 6th time because some newbie fixed a minor mistake Bolt was already aware of...

Only reason that I want to unprotect maps.
wav files.
Just to listen to them. I don't even save them to my computer if I find a wav file in an unprotected map.

using window mpq extractor thingy will allow you to extract sounds from a map. doesn't work for "free sounds" since they are 0 bytes. So you don't need to unprotect a map just to get a sound.

Sweet I think I'm gonna get that. But before I do, don't you have to have Starcraft versions either: 1.00, 1.05, 1.06, or 1.07? I tried opening it yesterday an error message showed saying I need one of those versions.

Cmon people dont be noobs and use that shit. Ive heard it before "But I only want to see how they made the triggers" thats being a noob because you dont know how to make triggers.
:nooob
Or "I just want to steal their sound" Im sure it was hard enough to get those sounds, so why just steal them and take the peoples credit and work?
:nooob
Or even if you just want to fix a maps bug, just tell the creator insted of changing one thing and giving yourself credit. Way too many maps on bnet that have 50,000 versions because of changing one thing and giving yourself credit. Well theres a new thing going around its called "make up your own idea for a map and make it"

:nooob

yea, listen to him! but i see no harm in taking their sounds...unless they take credit for it (like you said)
if you want to learn how, just see my other post in this thread.
it's very simple, and i read about this somewhere on blizzforums
i'm not sure who, but i give credit to him for telling me. even though he didn't know... (that I knew...er read.)

The idea is not to take credit. In an old map, Helms Deep 4.0, it has part of the music from The Lord Of The Rings, and if it was protected (which it's not) I'd want to unprotect it to listen to it. It's the best part of the song, too.

Sigh, right Fenix. Thanks for the tirade. I do not condone map stealing at all by distributing the program. And on top of that, since I have the Unprotector and I am very good with the editor, why are there not rigged versions of every single map out there right now? Because if someone had malicious intent, and wanted to waste alot of time, they could do that. Download every map, rig the crap, and distribute it on b.net, while people are being led to the slaughterhouse unknowingly (i.e playing the map without knowing it's rigged).

Secondly, some people (i.e me), simply want to look at the map. That is what I do. I do not EDIT, I DO look at triggers, and I DO look at unit statistics (i.e hp, attack damage etc), so that when I am making my own Lotr-style map (which I am doing right now), I can use THEIR knowledge to ensure that MY map is as FAIR as possible (as I am not very good at ensuring unit balance in my U.M.S maps). So, I think we can safely agree that simply by using the Unprotector, does NOT make you a newb. Learning from other people's maps contributes to the total knowledge of map makers, ensuring better maps in the future.

Thirdly, it is not that hard to find sounds. For example, in Normandy SE, there is a Homer's trademark Doh! when you die. Well, I conducted my own little search and found the same sound clip in under five minutes! So don't give people this BS about "it's so hard finding sounds". There are threads where people have been given links to sites with hundreds of clips of cool lasers, ships, and anything else you wanted. So THAT argument is moot.

Lastly, many people DO contact the creators of maps, simply because not everyone is some hacking 15 year old out to destroy Starcraft Multiplayer gameplay. Example, Lotr-Haldir created his "Helm's Deep v. Final" map after getting user feedback and implementing those ideas. Lastly lastly, if maps are good enough, but have a "few bugs" i.e some stuff that might give people a tiny advantage, but which can be overcome with superior gameplay, it will not be edited and will not have 50, 000 versions of it online, let alone 5.

And in conclusion, just think of b.net as Linux. I've used this analogy before. Linux is added on to year round by programmers. At the end of the year, the best parts are kept, and the worst removed. The program is then up to date and more efficient then the previous version. As in Linux, players can and will figure out for themselves, that some maps are rigged, and will rely on the original version of whatever map it is, given time. The b.net community is not some stupid herd of cows; they are intelligent people who are able to figure stuff out.

There. That should put an end to all this crap about SC Unprotect.

There are people who understand that map stealing is wrong (like you) however, just because you do, does not mean everyone else does.

If you want sounds, just do what I do, use the mpq thingy. It's easier than unlocking and openning, and listenning, and extracting. (because it only requires openning map, listening, and extracting ) Here, i'll be nice, and attach it.

Aside from the entire debate about map stealing...

THIS PROGRAM WAS STOLEN FROM ME. I do not want people distributing it.

Sweet, I'm downloadin it. I want to listen to .wav files from so many protected maps. There are some with repeating .wavs that are really cool and I want to listen to it.

Heimdal: You mean even the MPQ Extractor?
