New to custom games

Ok, so I am pretty new to Warcraft and even newer to the custom games. Here are some of my questions:

1. How do I host my own games? Whenever I try to make them, no one ever joins.

2. When I play custom hero arena, it says there is a way to stop the timer (type -st) for single player usage, but it never works. How do I make it work?

3. When playing CHA, how do you upgrade the orbs? I know it has something to do with elementals, but what?

4.Any other tips or anything would be appreciated. Thanks.

1) Patience? From what I know, the problem with custom maps is that everyone wants to play DotA Allstars 5.84b or the newest version, so nobody is going to notice generic custom map 1231, or wants to play it. You'd be best finding people who want to play the map first on a forum, for instance, then doing arrangements there.

2) If -st doesn't work, it's likely to be a coding issue with the map (editor's fault), or perhaps you are typing it at the wrong time. I don't play the map but it might be that you have to type it at the start?

3) No idea.

4) Any specific map?*

Well I know waiting for people is a necessity.. thats not what I mean. I believe it to be my games arent going up on the "custom game list." There are always people in the CHA games when they are made so it wouldnt be that no one wants to join them.

Anyone who knows more about the -st and orb upgrading please let me know.

1. You have a firewall/router thats preventing you from hosting. You need to open some ports and stuff. IDK how to do it, check in blizzard's tech forum.

2. Could be a map problem or you have a computer slot open. *Never played this.

It does say that for the -st to work the other team must be empty? Or something like that.. but you cant start the custom hero arena games without an opponent.. so I dont see how that would work.

You can start Computer-less games on Single Player mode, can't you?*

No sir, for some reason it would not let me start the game with just myself. I tried to do it several times (including closing all other spots) and it just kept telling me an opponent was needed.

So, I realized what I was doing with the -st thing. Thanks for the help, I was trying to do it online, not in single player..
