[css-d] Replacment for voice-family hack (?)
Sent by Jonas Erlandsson on 21 March 2003 12:12

[Apologies if this have been up before, I'm new ;o)]

During my work on a site in progress I discoverd wha could be a replacement
for the, a bit, longer voice-family hack that everyone is using ... This has
been tested in: IE 6.02, NS 7.0, Mozilla 1.2 and Opera 7. It is limited to
working with pixels (shouldnt be a problem since that's what the v-f hack is
most used). Anyway this is how and why it works:

The originall hack:

width: 100px;
margin: 30px;
voice-family: "("/}")"; /*or something like that ...*/
voice-family: inherit;
width: 40px;

The simple way:

width: 100px; /*Gives the right width to NS,Moz,O*/
margin: 30px;
width: 40; /*Lose the unit 'px' and you get IE width*/

Bug exploited seams to be that IE reads all the valuse even if they dont
have a unit wherest the other browsers ignores the value (acturly the whole
statment) if no unit is given ... First problem is that IE uses px as the
unit of choice. Which means that you cant use this trick with %, em, pt or
other units ... Problem two is that it dosnt work vith the value 0. For some
ilogical reason at least NS chooses to read the value 0 correctly even if it
has no unit. Theoreticly it's correct, 0 is 0 ... But it's illogical anyway
...

If someone could test this in another browser than the ones mentiond above
(especially IE 4 - 5.5 and NS 6 and all browsers for Mac, Linux) I'd be
happy to hear about the results ...
