There are 12 federal judicial circuits, which are further divided into 94 judicial districts.
Each circuit has a court of appeals; ours (Fourth Circuit) is in Richmond.
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land. It is in Washington, D.C.


The case is first tried in the appropriate district court.
If the losing party protests the ruling, he can take the case to the Circuit Court of Appeals.
During the appeal, the ruling of the district judge is reviewed. The ruling is either sustained or overruled.
