| a CANNOT OPEN FILE TO SAVE TO bug anyone ran into this before?
i have a few files that SCXE says i can't open that file to write
my new copy to (both old and new are same name of course).
i think it started after i tried to edit a file using GUEdit then i went
back to SCXE on the file. SCXE actually does save the file but...
it puts up the error and says it can't open that original file to write over.
anyone know how to get rid of this problem?

| ..so you open your map in SCXE, it opens fine, and then when you go to save it says it can't open it? Make sure you don't have the map in use by another program, like Broodwar, and try to save it. If it just isn't opening at all, make sure you're not trying to open a protected map. If neither of those things help, please elaborate on what you meant

| 1. i open "filename"
2. i do some changes
3. i hit save button
4. it says "could not open dir1/dir2/dir3/[filename].scx for writing"
HOWEVER... i found it SCXE does save it.
and yes.. make sure there are no other processes running which is
using this file.
like i said... not sure why it's FUBAR-ed like this.... seems to have been
GUEdit... that was the first occurence... then i quit messing around
with the team colors... and now SCXE is doing it also.
(it GUEdit doesnt' seem to ever let me write over the file iam
currently editting - which is funny cuz... well... that's the whole point
of saving?)
anyways... note again: it DOES SAVE... however SCXE says it CAN'T save it.
(i tested this out... so i know it does)

| That might be your problem. GUEdit doesn't let you overwrite the original map, which in trying to circumvent, you may have done something wrong. You have the original map, then you use GUEdit on it, and save it as the finished map with a different filename. When you go to edit again, you edit the original map, then you re-apply the GUEdit changes to it, and save it, overwriting the finished map. That's how it's supposed to work anyways, I've never edited a map that's had GUEdit applied to it because I always protect them. I have two folders, one for the original maps, one for the finished maps. Make sure you're editing the original map.

| This almost exact thing happened to me. It happened after I had saved a map(Evolves Defense) with SCMDraft 2. I open it up on SCXE, save it, says I can't save it, but it saves anyways.
What I used is SCMIE v1[1].5(attached below, if you need help using it, post back). I think it fixed the problem. I can't remember. It's been a year.
I'll attach my Evolves Defense that says it can't save but does anyways.(I Deleted everything and messed up the terrain so nobody can take my idea:ufo) |

| just tried that SCMIE... ditn' work... as a matter of fact... i can't even
open the testsave with SCXE anymore.
luckily i saved it under a different name just in case.
SCXE says... that has a scenario created from something other than SC.
(or something like that) and then goes on to say be sure to check that
the file is a valid SC data file.
so..... no go here.

| SCMIE v1[1].5 worked for your map when I tried it.
All I did was I created a new map with same terrain and dimension, saved it, opend up SCMIE v1[1].5, opened up your map, exported everything, opened up the new map, imported everything, and then saved.
The only thing I exported and imported were:
Terrain, Units, Doodads, Triggers, Briefings, Player Settings, Fog of War and Locations. Anything else you have saved(forces) were lost. |

| wait... how come you get an SCX file extension when you save with SCM?
i only get an SCM file.
i even manually changed the name... however... SCXE wont' let me edit the file.
i get same error as before.
(your file works tho)

| Because I had created and saved the 'new map' with Player 1's Start Location, Player 2's Start Location, and Player 1's Valkyrie. |

| What you could try is to export all your triggers using SCXE before using SCMIE, use SCMIE, do the import - export thing, then import your triggers using SCXE after using SCMIE. |

| hmmm....
i jsut re-tried the SCMIE.... it's still not working....
let me doublecheck... i REPLACE all the stuff.. not add on right?
this is what i did:
1. make dummy map with BW units to create dummy *.scx file
2. use SCMIE... export all the different things possible from the file
that i want to recover.
3. then... use SCMIE to open up the dummy file....
then IMPORT all the stuff i just exported out.
4. save over to a new name.
well... i did the above exactly.
still dont' work... my SCXE wont' let me open the file created by SCMIE....
not sure why.

| I'm not sure why either. I didn't save the 'dummy' map to a new name. I just saved over it.
Looks like the only option is to just live with the message saying you can't save it. |

| i think im gonna do a fresh reload of all my installed editors.
it doesnt' make sense if you can do it and i can't....
assuming im doing things "exactly" as told.
i remembered 1 boo boo the other day...
i had the same file opened with more than 1 editor...
i saved on side.... and i cant' quite remember if i saved on the other.
(this shouldn't really matter - but it might have)
if nothing else... i tried to open it with the real SCE... then
save it despite losing some buildings... and this worked
when i crashed the game a week or two ago when i ditn' know
you couldn't change the settings for a player once you start
(neutral, comp, human)
hmmm..... that just gave me an idea.... i wonder if the
P9-11 are still set as active? hah. let me go see.
