Re: What do you want to see on BF? Here's our budget...

a live shout-box will just hamper our forum posts, why bother putting that in?

you can't do everything on your own, but what you can do is wipe your staff clean and find people or even outsource people to be section leaders and leave it up to them to get traffic and such in.

find the right people, and the forums will be back to 'good' in under half a year.

Give the money to charity. I'm totally serious. There are people who need it more than us.

Re: What do you want to see on BF? Here's our budget...

I just as my own preference don't like shout boxes and arcades. And while Reputation systems have a notorious "reputation"(lmao) for being abused, the systems never really function that well.

Sorry for not offering an alternative to thigns like that. I still contest a modest system for adding and formalizing game reviews would benefit the community. When we did it before the forums crashed and Eric erased all my reviews, it was decent enough.

Re: What do you want to see on BF? Here's our budget...

So let me get this straight...how are we going to "encourage" users to only flame and **** in the Asylum? Reprimands get laughed at, point-based punishments are a joke, and god forbid someone on the staff moves/softdeletes a post.

I'm all for the betterment of BF, but I honestly have to say that I've seen many bursts of enthusiasm from many people, and they all go to **** in a week or so because nobody here has any kind of respect for authority.

That's what we get for being targeted at teens and young-adults who think their **** don't stink.

What do you suggest we do? The previous admins enforced strict rules and issued bans freely, and that only worsened the problem. The only way I believe we can make BF a better community is if we all have a common goal for it. It can't be just the staff, or just me. We need the whole community to cooperate and work towards a better BF, together.

Thank you,
Donny

PS, I'll contact vBulletin to see what the login problem really is.. When did this problem appear anyways? after the new skin, or after the recent server move?

Re: What do you want to see on BF? Here's our budget...

I rarely banned people (definitely didn't issue them freely).

However, our rules had definitely become ridiculous. Too many in attempt to cover everything. I think the one rule BF needs is *respect*..the one hardly anyone can follow.

I will say I obviously agree with pan. Old members need to be nicer to new members. That stressed me my entire time as admin. Of course, souless will tell you, being complete *******s to newbies has no effect on the forum what-so-ever. . I wish that were true.

Our forum rarely gets new, frequent posters, and as I've said for a long time, a lot of it is because of the atmosphere around here. I couldn't change it..but hey, it's possible you guys can.

As you say, only the members can make a change. However, that'll only happen if they want it to happen. I have a feeling several of them couldn't care less.

-edit

Oh, and make a mission statement/plan. BF needs an obvious direction and purpose. Something the members can understand, and something the staff can work towards. We had our peak several years ago, and from there..it seems bf has lost it's direction. Are we a blizzard forum? A general games forum? Just a generic chit-chat forum? What are we.

Without purpose, things go down hill and people lose motivation. Right now I'd say there's little motivation, and bf at the moment is simply a handful of old members who hang around because it's what they've always done.

I don't have an answer to the problem. Honestly, the only way I see that the problem will be dealt with is if the community itself decides to collectively pull its head out of its ass and stop with the "cooler than thou" attitude that essentially turns the forum into a popularity contest. I believe I've made an analogy between BF and high school in the past...and I adhere to that analysis.

I see three possible choices.

1) Go completely totalitarian and mercilessly IP ban anybody who feeds negativity on the forum. Make sure people like Mike, Jenny, Gimmi, Jim, and others like them have no chance whatsoever of coming back. By doing this, we lose most of our active memberbase, and without a decent group of quality posters there's little to attract new members...BF becomes no better.

2) Leave things as they are, and the general BF community stays the way they are. Nobody new wants to come because we're nothing but a bunch of narcissistic asses, and BF becomes no better.

3) Basic reserved spot for a solution I haven't been able to see yet.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

One thing is for sure...our staff is a joke, no offense. We remove adspam and that's about it. There's no enforcement of rules and regulations whatsoever. I bypass the swear filter constantly, and I've yet to see anybody at ALL, staff or otherwise, even take note of it.

The forum is only as good as its members, and our members aren't the shining example of what admins hope for. We're a forum of smart-asses who refuse to follow rules or respect anyone else. Anybody who cares about conducting oneself with civility and respect is ridiculed. This may be only an Internet community, but it is indeed a community...and ours is the kind of community that nobody wants to join.

And really, why should anybody here follow rules? There's literally nothing the staff can do to keep them in line. Any form of punishment is a joke. Warnings can be shrugged off like the meaningless account tags they are. Bans aren't enforced...if one account gets banned, another is quickly made...and even if one becomes permanently IPbanned...the word "permanent" doesn't seem to be understood by anyone here. Case in point: Cheeze. He's been "permabanned" more times than I care to count.

Our problem isn't going to be solved. That's been proven time and again. I appreciate your enthusaism, Donny...you've done a lot in your time here already...some irritating, some constructive. You ARE doing something with visible effects, which is admirable. You do actually seem to care. I greatly commend you on being able to monetize BF, even if the ads are a little irritating to look at.

Unfortunately, no amount of enthusaism from any one person or even any small group is going to help our situation. In order for BF to prosper, the forum as a whole needs to unanimously make an attempt to better itself...which isn't going to happen.

I apologize for my pessimism, and my lack of supplying any solutions to the problems I've been pointing out...but I seriously don't see any solutions as existing...

Re: What do you want to see on BF? Here's our budget...

BF isn't a worse case scenario. The members attitudes directly reflect the attitudes of the gamers we are hopping to attract. Have you ever been on Bnet? every 6 out of 10 people are pricks, and the other 4 are split between nice people, noobs and retards. Have you actualy been to other forums. there are plenty of places that are just as bad and many worse than Battleforums. Welcome to the internet, everyone tries to be an ******* because it is "cool". IT isn't isolated to Battleforums. (If you don't believe me browse Youtubes comment section for videos. You will never find a sorrier bunch of pricks).

If we want a focus on Gaming, we make sure new people are exposed to two things. A) our gaming forum, where there are new posts and content. B) Nice members who are helpful in the gaming environment, Because our rules will be strictly enforced there.

Deemphasize the general forums is good, so they become acquainted with the forum, and not the *******s here. Then when they post a bit it will be less of an intimidation from some of the older members.

We get it. You're tired of people making fun of you for being a loser and you want better members to be banned because of it. Don't waste Kinkarso's time with your sob story.
