Simple answer- The items don't show up in trade screen so the person puts the item on the ground as proof they have it for trade and this way you can't steal it off them because you are to far to get it.
in act 5 by the wp if they are farther away from the wp and your near the wp and you drop the anni they can grab it through the wall... It almost happened to me once. But I had m ymouse on it the entire time and i saw him move a little so I was like ABORT!!!! However I ahve gotten that scam to work for me a few times
