| I wouldn't suggest an Act 3 merc but gear setup should probably be like this:
Helm: eth shako or dream
Armor: eth Chains of Honor
Sword: Spirit
Shield: Spirit

| Not sure if mercs get + skills, I have to look into that, but, if they do not, then the Spirit runeword is useless on a merc.
Try making a aura merc:
Dragon - armor/shield
Dream - helm/shield
Lawbringer - weapon/ 6x 5/5 facet sword (facets to match merc elemental)
Phoenix - weapon/shield
Any of these in combo with the rest, can cause some serious stacking of auras and damage, but, once again, depending on your character and main purpose it might be better to go with a act 2 merc.

Since you are so vauge on details, I will give some options. I assume you are playing on bnet, and are ladder.
Act 2 NM Holy Freeze:
Infinity or Botd weapon, Chains of Honor armor, Gaze (umed)
Act 2 Norm Might: (if you have some summons)
Infinity or DOOM, Chains of Honor armor, Gaze (Umed)
Act 2 Norm Prayer: (if you have some summons)
Pride, Chains of Honor armor, Gaze (Umed)

| If you are dead set on a Act3 Lightning Merc:
Dream helm/shield with Phienox weaopn and Dragon Armor.
This will add loads of light damage, as well as some fire for the immunes (Not enough to kill king) Also redemtion Aura, so you dont need to pot the merc. If you dont want the added fire damage, switch out the weapon for Spirit, and armor for Chains of Honor, or even Fortitude or Stone.
I would suggest this however:
Act 2 NM Holy Freeze:
Infinity weapon, Chains of Honor armor, Gaze (umed)
