Scanning for possibly infected files, links that will help

I'm fairly new here so not sure if this needs to be posted here or not but I haven't seen anything like it as of yet. However while browsing around and with everything hunting for legit 1.11 mh etc many people are getting infected and/or wanting to check for infections within files.

Here is a short compilation of free online virus scanners along with the link to their websites. I will also put links to free antivirus programs or offers for free year of updates. And please people if you do not already have an anti-virus running on your computer seriously consider installing one, especially if you plan on trying to use any files downloaded from unknown sites. There are plenty of free alternatives which will work decently (e.g. AVG, Avast, AntiVir are all free)

ONLINE SCANNERS

Panda Antivirus
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

eTrust Antivirus
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Trend (PCcillin)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Jotti online scan (single file scanner but scans with multiple programs)
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Symantec Security Check
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym

Kaspersky single file scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
------------------------

FREE ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS

AVG Anti-virus
http://free.grisoft.com

Avast Anvivirus
http://www.avast.com

Antivir Anti-virus
http://www.freeav.com/

Bitdefender (free version is on demand only)
http://www.bitdefender.com/

eTrust Anti-virus 1 year free updates (they have this offer just about every year so it's easily renewed)
http://store.ca.com/dr/v2/ec_main.en...939&CID=190471
------------------------

FREE ANTI-TROJANS

Ewido (free version is on demand only)
http://www.ewido.net/en/

A-squared
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
------------------------

I hope this at least helps some people out. If needed I also have a list of all the email addresses to submit suspected file samples to anti-virus vendors I can post that if anyone wishes. Again if this is in the wrong place or "not appropriate" for any way shape or form I apologize ahead of time.

A very nice thread, I want to thank you for posting it given we have trojans that come in here frequently without any way to detect them unless we find a user who can scan the file anyways. Unless CM Disagrees and doesn't want this up, this thread is now ''sticky''.

It was no problem making this thread. I just hope it helps to keep people safe from all the junk that runs around on the net these days and can hopefully keep people from flooding the forums with links to viruses/trojans etc.

Something I thought about adding but did not yet was links to free anti-spyware programs etc since many of the infected files found today will install tons of spyware/adware on comps. If you guys think I should add these or would like to see it added I can edit it into the post or just post a reply with links to what free ones are out there. So please let me know if you'd like me to or not.

I know it's a bit old of a thread. And I couldn't edit my original. Was just going to add this site for multiple engine scanner. It currently uses AntiVir, AVG, Avast, Avira, BitDefender, CAT-QuickHeal, ClamAV, DrWeb, eTrust-Iris, eTrust-Vet, Fortinet, F-Prot, Ikarus, Kaspersky, Mcafee, NOD32, Norman, Panda, Sophos, Symantec, TheHacker, VBA32.

I have a question. Is there any way to scan a file without downloading it first?

I don't believe you can scan a file that you haven't downloaded :/ . Simply "downloading" a file won't necessarily get you infected. Running the file is more of the dangerous part. Generally I have a folder which I download any suspicious or unknown files to, everything within that folder is renamed to something like yaddayadda.unknown or yaddayadda.virus - this ensures I won't accidentaly execute it while poking around even if double-clicking etc. You can then generally upload the file to a scanner quite safely and see what they have to say.

A person can download all the viruses/trojans in the world and not infect themselves so long as you handle things properly. But by all means if you're not comfortable with messing with such things and believe something is infected just don't download/run it and move along to somewhere else. Nothing is ever 100% safe so sh*t still happens and if you're not comfortable with it you should definitely leave the things alone.

True, in fact, viewing the virus .exe in Notepad won't infect you either.*
