I doubt it. D3 will probably be more graphically defined and a lot different then D2 - to the point where such a transaction of characters bertween the games would be impossible. They may add new classes in place of the old ones and that would cause character convering to not work either. Release-date wise, I have my money betted on sometime during 2006.

Yeah probably not the chars and other stuff will brobably be in a differant format for D3 adn that wouldnt give you the chance to start of new you could already ahve a lvl 99 ikn the first hour of the game.

Well we probably won't be seeing Diablo III till' about 2009 so like Darkmatter said the graphics will be much more defined and the game will probably have more detail and newer items. So, almost 100% sure no.

U really think 2009? If it was that long blizzard would have at least tried making a new dam patch if they were gonna make us wait 4 more years, i was thinking late 2006 maybe even early-mid 2007. But i think u probably wouldnt convert chars due to the fact that there'd be so many changes for example if they kept a pally i am sure the skill tree and synergies would change so a B hammer pally might end up doing only 4k..eww
