| WoW is a pay-per-month subscription game. This is where they anticipate making the real money.
Successful MMORPG's make a killing (no pun intended).
Diablo may have sold well, but that was a long time ago. Now it's a budget title and I'm sure not very many copies sell. Then think of those 30k-40k people on battle.net constantly playing diablo. Blizzard has to pay for those servers and to support the game, with very little income coming in. For years.
Now imagine if Blizzard were getting $12.95 a month from each of those players. If 30k-40k are on at any given time, then there must be hundreds of thousands of players who play fairly regularly.
100,000 players times $10 a month would be a cool million dollars a month. This is the kind of thing Blizzard is banking on for WoW, though I am sure the numbers will be even higher. Iam sure the the support and infrastructure costs to support WoW will be higher too, however.
