Eternal Champions

Does anyone else remember this game? This is actually my favorite fighting game for the Genesis. Yes, even moreso than Mortal Kombat II.

Basically, you played as one of nine characters who died at some point in history. They all had in-depth backstories, and reading their history and how they originally died was enjoyable. They were all from completely different time periods, and each stage is one of the locations in time where someone was killed, and every stage has a special fatality that can be performed by anyone at any time during the fight, which somehow relates to the location/time period/cause of person's death.

The basic story is that far in the future, the balance of light and darkness, good and evil, hope and despair, etc, is in jeopardy, and the world is at the brink of being plunged into utter destruction. Now, there were nine people in history who would have changed the world in such a way that this would never happen, but they died before they could. These nine people are the characters in the game, and the winner of the tournament will be sent back to a few seconds before they died, with the knowledge to escape their death and change the future.

I always preferred Xavier myself, the Alchemist from 1692 who discovered how to create an unlimited source of cheap, clean-burning energy. Of course, he happened to live in Salem, and before he could document his discovery, the good people of Salem deemed his Alchemic research to be the work of a Warlock, and promptly burned him at the stake. His energy source was so powerful that it gave him some interesting powers before he died, which he uses when he fights.

Also, Xavier's stage is set at the bonfire he was burned at. At any time during the fight, if you can uppercut someone to perfectly hit the ground, and then bounce into the fire, they'll catch ablaze and soon after die instantly.

If you ever played this game, give your thoughts or memories about it, what character you played with, what you liked most about the game, or whatever else you want to say.

I liked Xavier too, his staff-into-dragon and bite the opponent thing was cool.

You know, all of the players had some neat aspects to them.

I liked Jetta, for one. The way you could speed her up was pretty neat. Blade had some pretty cool abilities, too. The whole "tracking buzzsaw" was fun. I had a special spot in my heart for Larcen, too. In his stage fatality, doesn't the other player get riddled with bullets in a driveby?

Hey, wasn't there a caveman dude, in whose level fatality a dinosaur came off the side of the screen and dragged you off? He was cool.

My favorite feature in the game though was the customizable battle arena. You could pick and choose the challenges that would be thrown at you as you fought.

Yeah, death by driveby. He was really stylish, I liked him too.

Slash. He developed the idea for the first agricultural system, and when the clan Elders wouldn't approve it, he spoke out against them at a clan meeting. The clan found this radical action 'evil' and stoned him to death on the spot. And yeah, the dinosaur fatality was cool

There were a lot of features like that. I definitely enjoyed the customizable battle arena though, and the practice mode was always fun.
