Prequels and Sequels

Do you think that it matters if bought the sequel of a video game without buying the first one? Would you be missing out on somthing? Or do you think it depends on what type of game, for example buying Need for Speed: Underground 2 before buying the first one, buying Halo2 and not buying Halo, or buying Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and not the Sands of Time. What do you think?

I'm totally anal when it comes to that. I HAVE to play any game with sequels from the beginning. If nothing else, than for the fact that you can miss out on humor or helpful hints that would help you find something you'd never normally find.

But on top of that, it helps you have a point of reference. It prevents you from buying the sequel, going "OMFG THIS IS THE BEST ****ING GAME EVER", only to find out the game was a flop, and it's predecessor had done much better, with higher ratings overall.

completely depends on the game. i would never imagine playing halo2 without knowing the story from halo1. ever ever ever. now i must read the books of halo to make sure im missing nothing. when im into the plot, yeah i refuse to play the second game without beating the first..

but splinter cell is different for me. i dont give a **** bout the story. i like sneaking around and killing stuff. when it gets boring i quit. i have both splinter cells, have yet to beat either.

i ofton do play the first game, then go on with it in order, because if i dont then im afraid i will miss some of the great parts of the sequel. Playing the first game ofton helps you out with the second as well. In NFS:u you dont really have to worrie about it alot because the 2nd one is really different and has nothing to do with the first one really.
