Sony advertising

I know this is really old news, but I don't think there's been a thread on it.

Sony's advertising campaign: the viral videos, the fake websites, hiring graffiti artists to incorporate PSPs into their work... most people that I've seen discuss it have been outraged by the fact that Sony thinks people will buy into their attempts to incorporate their products into urban culture. I have to say, as someone who's interested in advertising, it offers a very unique understanding of effective alternative means of advertising.

Yeah.. But advertising hardly ever works.. Once someone hears about the product, they decide if they are going to buy it or interested in buying it within seconds..

I doubt PSP's in graffiti will make anyone be like "THAT O.G GANGSTA IS DRAWING PSP'S I GOTTA GET ME ONE!!1"

it's about getting your product known. Not everyone goes on gaming websites, or takes trips to the game store, so if Sony is going around trying to get as many people of that group to know they have a PSP, and that it does everything short of giving you sexual pleasure.

As much as people say advertising is "useless", it's not until a person has seen the same advert at least 5 times before actually registering the name in their minds, though it's more in the case of new brand names. It's all about the public image they want to portray as well, so I suppose Sony is trying to be more careful as in that sense. Sort of like not wanting a repeat case of Burberry where there was too much advertising.
