| Nintendo DS Redesign Nintendo DS will be getting a redesign, because of course in the span of a year, Nintendo has been able to improve thier technology by 20%, to reduce the DS by that amount. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3147494

| It looks better than the ones they have now, that's for sure. I guess they are trying to get that "hi-tech" feel to it, and the glossyness that the PSP gave to the handhelds.
Maybe I will finally get a DS.

| I don't much see the point. Then again XD I don't see the point behind the GBA's multiple redesigns. I'm perfectly happy with my original DS. It does look sleeker, and I've heard the screen is brighter, much like the new SP.

| So, I wonder if they'll carry this idea over to their main consoles - redesign them every 6 months...

| It's a bit less often then that =/ and every company does it. For example, the PlayStation2 had several "generations" -- each getting rid of a major bug. For example, the GameCube had it's "digital output" port (component ED video) combined with the "analog output" port (composite SD audio/video) and eventually removed all together.
It's a part of business to keep up with technological trends. In the case of the PS2, Sony had to do quality control because their generation one system was junk. In the case of the GC, Nintendo saw subpar sales in ED cables as reason to pull the plug on the costly ports.

| Also redesigns are done for cost cutting. If you can put out a cheaper product for the same price, you have higher profits. Something like Sega Saturn had trouble with this, becuase redesigning was ineffective to the point the N64 and the playstation were cutting the price, and Sega couldn't because they couldn't redesign it. It's all a buisness plan. |

| Hence my second example Redesigns happen for one of three, basic reasons, and those can be expanded to a longer list.
a) price-point reduction
b) quality control
c) consumer appreciation
The first is obvious. You either increase profit by reducing price to produce and leaving it the same market-cost or you keep profit as is and reduce market-cost.
The second is, again, obvious. The PS2, PSP, and 360 all have seen this.
The third is more a, "Huh? What?!" The DS is seeing this type of redesign. It's a more aestetic than practical approach.
