Clearing Temp files..

If you allow hidden folders to be viewed, go to Start>My Computer>C Drive> Documents and Settings> (user of computers name)>Local Settings there is a folder called Temp. is it safe to delete the contents in there to retrieve disk space?

COTA, is there a way to set it up so that the temporary internet files get deleted after a certain period of time?

In THEORY, you could get Task Scheduler to do this automatically, by running a simple batch program and scheduling it. I can't recall if Windows XP has this feature though. After all, it was underused by Windows 98SE users.

You can design the batch program in a text file.

cd \
del c:\docume~1\user name\temp\*.* /y
exit

and saving it as a .bat file.

Of course, get this correct. You don't want to delete your porn stash.

Then you can schedule it to run every, say, week using Task Scheduler.

The reason why this might not work is because at the time when the task is scheduled to run, there may be programs using that temporary folder.*

There are temp files, and there are temp internet files. Both should be deleted regularly -- especially the temp files. If you get too many of them, your computer can experience all sorts of weird problems. Here's a little "basic maintenance checklist" you can do at least monthly, if not weekly:

-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp, or on XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp)

-- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*, or on XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)

-- If you use I.E., click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, select "delete all off-line content", click OK

-- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Disk Cleanup

-- Download AdAware, check for updates, run it and remove whatever it finds

-- Download Diskeeper and defrag

-- Download, update and turn on SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (or your spyware removal tool of choice).

Temp is for temporary files, just be careful what you delete there. Especially when you need to go to your Windows and clear your Dump files.

You could put the batch file that x42 suggested in your registry startup key to clear it every time your reboot. [Generally nothing should be using it when you reboot]

Diskeeper is definitely better than the built-in defragger. It doesn't quit or restart when it encounters open apps or files, and you can set it to run in the background and always keep your drive defragmented (rather than spending a few hours every time), among other things. Some of the features are here: http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp
