My teacher's sister-in-law was in a seaside hotel at the time of it. The eastern half of the hotel was demolished, and 2000 people died. Musre have been scary hearing that happened until they found she was alright =P

Oh, and he already said he's fine in the other thread on this.

I think it was a good day for mother nature. It is the balance of life. We were getting over populated with china f*ckin like dogs over there. The war and the erffquake took it back into perspective.

You realize, if it was anywhere else, a place where there were no tourists from the west, just a poor country, there wouldn't be half as much coverage and even less than half the donations going on.

Its the biggest number of deaths in a time of peace. There is no way it could be ignored or down-played.

You have alot of faith, there is no way there would be as much need to give. Only reasons Canada and the USA even gave large donations was because they were critisized. now its all to jsut look better. The original donations from Canada, and the USA were small. When ppl start to critisize they were increased. You cannot say either country is generous, they just didn't want a bad image.

Only reason it gets as much coverage as it does, is there were alot of tourists there. If you turn on the TV, All I hear about is how many americans are missing, or some story about an american or a canadian family's story. The Actual death toll is repeated, but it then reverts to the tourists who were there. It is really sad when I watch the news how it is covered. The media has centered around that, there would be less to cover, if you just showed unknown ppl from that region who just had the misfortune of living in that country at the time. All you would hear was, "well that is nature, there are tons of natural disasters." The fact there were ppl from North America, and Europe made it much more of a story.

That's the way the Media cover any *international* story. If it has *home interest*, like americans or canadians missing, the reporting will always focus on this.

I am sure that if they werent any tourists among the victims the coverage would be different but this doesnt mean that the rest of the world would ignore the story. It is too huge of a catastrophe to be ignored.

And yes, governements do hope for good public relations among the muslims when they offer money but that's not the case with common people. The Greek people have already collected 15 million euros for the tsunami victims and more are coming. And for this we must all thank the television covering. If it wasnt for those images very few would have cared.

Actually, no, Galatia, Pan has a point. AFP and Reuters run pictures about foreign tourists being lost, and I once saw a picture that didn't half include the casualties and fatalities from Indonesia and Sri Lanka, the worst hit countries.

There are conspiracy theories flying around, too. Why did the US send a warship to the area? Why was one of the American camps evacuated before the tsunami hit, and the other countries did not know?

I can't be bothered to spend ages worrying about these things. What I do know is that there is definitely some biased coverage somewhere.

Shame, really. And I am probably under threat again, because of other potential quakes in the area..... *shudders*..... If a 10.0 quake hits around the same area, I will definitely feel the shocks. -.-;*

All the news stories I see about it only briefly mention Americans, mostly they focus on the possibility of the millions that could die from disease.
