ok. I want to come out and introduce myself to everyone here, set the record straight. I've been here for a while and at times, I admit, my words seem harsh or asshole-ish. So I'm not trying to be an asshole - I'm just speaking the truth, ok?
I probably have a few years on all of you. I have my A+, was totally into building PC's. Even did it for a living cause I was so good at configurations, windows networking, etc.
I've always been into music. I've been playing several instruments since I was very young. I got into audio production using a pc years back. I was from a small dirt town, and my tastes were pretty different than everyone there.
A few years back, a friend of mine, an internationally reknowned industrial rock artist, told me about mac. I basically laughed at him. He told me about how he could get me a sweet deal on one. I declined.
I started getting curious. Finally I coughed up the money to get a (then) powerful g3 computer. I didn't like it at first.
I started using pro audio applications and realized I never get the hiccups I get in windows, and the apps supported are almost of a windows variety (there's only a couple small progs that don't work - and they're usually little home made programs anyway that aren't commercial). I was also pleased to know that all games since about 1995 came dual layered with mac data, installing as simple as windows and written to take special advantages of the processor configurations, resulting in mainly 2x the speed of windows counterparts.
Slowly but surely, I left all of my pc shit behind, I am now a successful international producer/artist myself. Every large city I've gone - it's everywhere. Recently I've noticed corporations needing OS X certification because they're phasing out windows related hardware and linux/unix by itself is not that intuitive or too expensive to upkeep.
I have friends of friends that use the G5 exclusively for making hit feature films: LOTR series, digitally remastering the Star Wars Trilogy, Shrek series - basically everything that has digital special fx in it because the programs used for the movies utilize a special chip on the mac processors and the dual high speed front side bus to process speeds 4 - 8 times greater than any production PC could reach.
Case in point, you can get the parts yourself to build your own g5. I know there's a lot of mac bashers out there.. but think of it this way - I've seen hollywood and basically the digital entertainment industry convert to mac years ago. It's getting now that all digital editing programs and games are being released 6 months to a year before they hit PC shelves. It's kinda like what happened in the 80s - obsoletion of dos or tandy- today's top tools are not going to be ported to windows. This is just the view of someone who's seen the tech industry change. There's a couple rumors out there that just wont die though. So I'm telling you all, from a personal perspective, they're not true. You can use any mouse you want and have all of the functions. Hear me out, don't attack me on this. I'm trying to be as nice as possible and get my point across. I'm not trying to convert anyone, I'm just presenting the facts and I'm speaking the honest absolute truth. I swear to you I was a PC guy for a long time.. but times are changing.
So in response to your question, I would suggest a dual proc g5, they run games twice as fast as the pc counterparts, and todays top producers use it for feature films, as has been the case for years. You'll have access to tools that PC users may never have.
Sorry for the long post everyone
