money isnt too much of an issue, but im not looking for a board with a bunch of integrated stuff on it, i already have lan, video and soundcard, and am not interested in wi-fi. gonna be used for gaming
Well as of right now I am only upgrading my mobo, I have an older Asus that is only agp 4x. I have a GeForce fx 5600, 768 2100 DDR Ram, xp 1800+ SB Live Platinum etc. It's gonna be used for any and all games, HL 2, Doom 3, games like that.
If you want to play Doom 3, I Highly recommend upgrading. I guess you could play Doom 3 on that but it wouldn't be that great (more like a slide-show). Geforce FX 5600 is a very bad card. Even the Geforce 4 TI owns it. Just look at the benchmarks on Tom's Hardware VGA Charts III.
I would sell that PC for like $400+ and buy these...
-AMD Athlon XP 2500+ ($80 Retail)
-ABIT NF7-S Motherboard ($92) Includes nvidia ss so u can sell ur sb live.
-RAIDMAX Scorpio 868 ($62) 420W and nice look
-Western Digital 80 GB 7200 RPM ($67)
-Corsair Value PC3200 512MB DDR ($82)
-Radeon 9600 XT ($120) or Radeon 9800 Pro ($190)
To meet "medium" expectations for Doom 3 I suggest getting a Radeon 9600 XT. Also the 2500+ is a good match with the 9600 XT. If you plan on running Doom 3 on your 1800+ with GF 5600 I suggest not buying it at all.
