Tweaking Virtual Memory (WinXP)

Tweaking Windows XP Professional By Virtual Memory

Written by Joshua Drake (jd-inflames)

What it does:

Virtual memory in this sense is simply reserved space on your
hard drive to help your computer run better. It justifies how much
of your phyisical memory is going to be needed when trying to do
simple tasks such as loading your start menu. This tip will speed
up your windows browsing by 50%-100% depending on how much RAM
(memory) you have loaded in your machine.

Pros:

This small tip will not only speed up your system significantly,
but it is easy to do. Your standard PC user shouldn't have any
trouble getting this to work to their advantage.

Cons:

The only real problem with this technique beings it is so easily
reversible, is that it takes up valuable hard drive space. For
instance, if you have 256MB of RAM, this tweak will take up
approximately 768MB of hard drive space. That isn't much for
some, but if you have 1GB of ram, that is close to 3GB of hard
drive space that you will not have access to.

How To (Detailed):

Like I said before, this is an incredibly simple tweak. Right click
on "My Computer" and select the option "Properties" from the menu. You
should get your system properties with all of your computer information,
such as your operating system, who the machine is registered to, and your
computer specs. Well, we aren't interested in that. At the top of this
screen is around seven tabs. Pick the tab that says "Advanced". By
doing this, you will see 3 different columns: Performance, User Profiles,
and Startup and Recovery. You want to click the "Settings" button that is
located in Performance. Now in here, you will see a bunch of checkmarks.
Again, ignore these and pay attention to the two tabs at the top. You want
to click on the tab that says "Advanced". In this tab, you will see three
more columns. The one you want to pay attention to the column that is title
"Virtual Memory". Click the button in this column that says "Change". Now
you will want to pay attention to the middle of this display title "Paging
file size for selected drive". By defualt, it will be selecting your C:
drive as you can see above in your drive information. Ok, here is what you
will be changing. In that second column I mentioned, you will see that the
button for "Custom size" is clicked, and it will have two things that you can
change, Intial size (MB) and Maximum size (MB). What you are going to want to
do is change the Initial Size (MB) to the same size as the Maximum Size (MB).
When the numbers are in, click the "Set" button on the bottom right hand corner
of that column. Now, if you are running multiple hard drives, you may do this to
your other hard drives as well. But, if you are finished, proceed by clicking
"OK" at the bottom of that menu.
Then, just apply and OK your way back to your desktop and you are done.

How To (Advanced):
Here is the step by step for those of you who are a little more advanced
in PC Maintenence.

1. Right Click on My Computer

2. Click Properties

3. Click Advanced tab

4. Click Settings button in Performance

5. Click Advanced

6. Click Change in Virtual Memory column

7. Change the virtual memory's minimum paging to the maximum so both
numbers match

8. Click Set

9. Repeat steps 7-8 for all extra hard drives

10. Click apply, then exit until you are backto your desktop

Learned that from a MSCE class about 2 years back....A lot of people don't see how much Windows holds your machine back.
