| Re: Real Life Spartan Suit Got to love that handy positioning of the watch eh? The mask design makes sense though, bulletproof glass is heavy and its kind of hard to treat something with kevlar and keep it clear enough to see through, thus if he used actual Spartan type helmet, to make the faceshield bulletproof would make it excessively heavy, something you don't want. Its probably made of kevlar padded plastic, good enough to stop shrapnel, nothing like some of the heavier helmets like the one used by Russian spetsnaz, it weighs about 3 kgs, has a clear bullet-proof glass face shield that can stop a 9 mil pistol round point blank, you can only use it 30 minutes at a time though, most people get too tired after that.
In any case, this isn't about how it looks (infact for something that supposedly wants to one day be military grade it looks kinda fancy), this is about if it is effective or not, which we might find out if this guy gets enough donations and does a live test against an IED. As in he is going to wear it and set off an IED near him, he is either crazy (most likely) or really smart. It might actually work depending on the charge, he uses bullet proof foamr to protect his torso, arms and legs which can stop a buckshot pointblank, thus it would make sense against shrapnel...there is still exposed areas though which could screw him over if a piece of shrapnel gets in there. Actually come to think of it thats a major short coming.
Here is another one about this thing: YouTube - Real Life Master Chief
This is the helmet I was talking about : http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums...1&d=1163802835 http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums...7&d=1163816601

In early February, after failing to receive any offers to buy the Trojan, Hurtubise - now bankrupt from the expense of creating the suit - was forced to put the prototype up for auction on eBay in the hopes that it would bring in enough money to sustain his family.[9] Unfortunately for Hurtubise, the auction's reserve bid was not met.[10] There was a raffle for the suit on the Mission Trojan website, whose goal is to raise money for further prototypes and testing of the Trojan Suit to demonstrate its abilities for military applications.[11] The suit was won by Sara Markis of West Palm Beach, Florida. |

Fuel cells are a solution, so is solar power, but fuel cells tend to explode and solar power isn't efficient enough last time I've heard.
But back to the crazy dude, as you can see that armor doesn't cover his whole body you can see his undershirt on the sides of his body and under his arm pits. An IED is basically some explosives tied down to a bag of nails or some other type of small sharp objects. Explosive goes boom, nails or even the metal fragments from the bomb's casing fly into all the directions, they will most definitely penetrate that guy on the side of his body and the arm pits even if his frontal body armor can withstand them. That said you could treat the undershirt fabric with kevlar to add some protection but thats way above his budget.
New types of body armor today that are being researched by both Russia and the West look into liquid armor, forget the bulky American Dragon Skin with its heavy weight ceramics (I doubt it'll ever be implemented) the new game is to have an armor that is light and soft until it gets hit by a projectile at which point the particles of the liquid solidify and converge at the point that the projectile struck. This isn't sci-fi either, there are already prototypes in existence. |
