Dubai is trying to diversify its economy, away from an oil-based economy, to a finance and tourism based one. While the process is well underway, Dubai is still entierly dependant on oil. This is what oil-rich countries are supposed to look like, if they werent government by incompetant dictarors and ripped appart by ethnic strife.

The dubai spaceport idea is poop, for two reasons. First, such a spaceport would be located in space, and second, it would be an international project.

Last summer I was in Quatar, which is competing with Dubai as far as developement is concerned, and it was one of the most disturbing experiences of my life. Dubai is supposed to run out of oil in 2014-2016 I beileve, correct me if I am wrong. They are beginning to rely more on tourism like someone said. I get to go there this summer. =)
