Here is a little trick that I figured out a couple years ago while talking to Microsoft hardware support on the phone. The situation was that I spilt water on my Microsoft Natural Keyboard, so I decided to tell them that it mysteriously stopped working .
Well they said they would be happy to ship me a new one out all they needed was the P/N (Product Number ?) from the back of the device. Well I gave it to them and they said they would have a new one shipped out 2nd day air today! Which was great but when I asked them where to ship the old one back they just said 'Throw it away' I was flabbergasted.
So I did just as they said and sure enough 2 days later my brand new keyboard arived. Well after that phone call I got an idea to drive off to my local WalMart and copy the P/N off of one of there display Joysticks...
Well sure enough 2 days later I received my brand new Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick...
I have done this with just about every hardware product that Microsoft makes.
If its not a product that they have out on display then just open the box and write the number down that way. If they ask you how long ago you bought the product just make sure you tell them it was less then 90 days ago and you received it as a gift(so they can't tell you to take it back to the store you purchased it from.). Caution this will not work with any other brand (at least none that I have tried) most will ask you to return the broken equipment first or give a credit card.
Good Luck !
| Anyone wanan try this to see if it works?
If so , does it only work in america?
I'd try it but i dont have p/n number

Grand theft keyboard scamming. Im so sure thats a federal offence.
besides, sense when does spilling water ruin keyboards? I know my friends and I have spilt probly 15 cokes on mine, and the keys stick for a few days, but then its fine.
I might acually try this, if i didnt have like 15 extra keyboards laying aroung.

| IT'S FRAD IT'S FRAD IT'S FRAD.
It looks like it would work, but just because it works, doesn't mean it's a good idea. I don't mean ethically, I mean you can get away with stealing for a while, but eventually you are going to get busted. |

| Check your state laws first. In California, stealing anything over $400 is considered a felony. Any less, a misdemeanor. |

| Umm ya, I just tried this with a wireless keyboard and mouse, and some jewbag at Microsoft wouldn't stop asking for the "product ID number" (apparently not the serial number). I even asked to speak to his manager and he told me to go online. It was like a ten minute conversation...
