Slow wireless internet

Of all the knowledge about computers I have obtained over my many reclusive years spent slaving over the keyboard, one aspect of computer know-how I never managed to teach myself was networking. Now that we have two computers in the houle (mine and my girlfriend's), we decided to purchase DSL. Fortunately, we already had a wireless modem that we could use.

However, internet speeds seem to be... lacking at times. On my computer, at least. Sometimes, a page as simple as Google seems to take forever to load on the 3Mbps aDSL connection. Trying to stream media becomes a pain because, every once in a while, the media is forced to re-buffer and play back at 32kb/s. Any clue as to why it might be doing this? My girlfriend says that she has the same problem on her computer, but it's short-lived and doesn't happen nearly as often as it does on my laptop. We're using a 2wire Gateway modem.

Well there could be a ton of things wrong. Ethernet cords to the router could be bad and such or you could have an underpowered wireless signal.

I would just call someone to check things out.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Unfortunately, I don't think that professional help is cheap.

Oddly enough, though, the connection only seems to slow down until I restart it. Does that narrow it down at all?

Reinstall your wireless card drivers, if that doesnt work, go into the settings and reset them to factory, then fix your settings so that it works again. Check to see if you keep getting the errors. If you do, idk.

I hate 2WIRE Modems, it's pretty much the whole "Hey we're SBC and we're buying you out", "Oh well ok, but we have to cut production costs so we are going to spend less money on routers".

It very well could be either an old wireless card, or an old router.

Hey, cool! Reistalling my wireless modem's driver seems to have done the trick. Pages load smooth like a lubricated rectum on exlax. Beautiful.

It's not that you're unwanted. It's just... everyone's been buying SBC out, anyway. Have they changed SBC Park (previously Pacbell Park) to "SBC Yahoo! Provided by AT&T Park" yet?

Don't feel bad. Look, you've got your own thread in Chit Chat!

I'm still having problems. Same problem, actually.

For some reason, pages take longer and longer to load until they eventually don't load at all. Or maybe they do, but I don't have the patience to wait more than 30 seconds for a Google page to load. However, if I restart the connection or simply switch my wireless card off and back on quickly, everything will be fine again. Why's it doing this? Does resetting the connection flush something? Is there a way to get it to do that more often, so I don't have to reconnect?

sounds like another driver problem....go to your manufactorers website and get the latest released drivers for your wireless card.

My internet is redicously slow on many pages, mostly buffering for videos. I left the computer on while on a google video page, and came back over an hour later and it was still buffering.

My modem is the shitty 2wire that comes with sbc yahoo. Any suggestions as to what could be the cause of this?
