"fight fire with fire" This could very well work, but I hope they don't carelessly play with this fire. It is still HIV, and may mutate into something else. We are now well aware that HIV can mutate, and cause much more damage faster than usually expected.

Even though 80 percent of the AIDS virus was stripped of the HIVE sequence, who knows what can happen.

Interesting. I think it has potential, but it shouldn't be taken rashly. A virus is still a virus. It can be reprogrammed, but it will still be a VIRUS. They need to be careful. It'd be awesome if it worked, but just imagine if they didn't remove enough of the virus DNA to disable it? It'd infect the person, and they'd infect a person, over and over again, until a pandemic was started from a few scientists trying to make a difference.

Even then, someone infected with HIV typically lives longer than someone with cancer that isn't responding to any other treatments, so, at worst, it would prolong their life. Unless, of course, it mutates into some new-age über HIV strain that kills the person faster than the cancer would have.

If it did end up being viral though, the difference is that cancer isn't contagious. What's the point of living longer if you can't live it up?
