but is it moving uniformly? thats another matter entirely. it may be moving outward but it may not be moving outward in a perfect spherical formation

it doesent have to be spericle,it can be all mesed up,but it will still have a center point, like everything has a center no matter the shape of the object

What if, there was no end to our universe and it kept on going? There isn't a need for the universe to even have an end.

are u so sure?

perhaps, if there was a big bang, its taking billions if not trillions of years for the opposite effect of the big bang to occur(for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction) the universe is very old, and the right sun going supernova can cause the universe to collapse in on itself or somehting and suck all existance away and there would be a dark space where we now live

1. Well, you use billions and trillions of years as if we can really measure the time of the universe =\

2. You say the big bang as if it were true. Like it or not, the big band is STILL a hypothesis.

3. Also, lol, blackholes are still a hypothesis as well. That's what I assumed you went when you said the universe would collapse in on itself.

Ok, we're trying to measure the universe to find the center. If the universe is growing. String Theorist say there could have been many big bangs, but from the sides of the universe crashing together (if there were more than 1 space plane) not from the center out.
Imagination time:
That guy down there is shooting @ our universe blob and those little dots represent stars, planets, whatever.
| .. .. ... .. . . . . . . . .. . ... ... .. . ....|
Ok, so our universe gets hit? Now what? It might look like this!
> . . . . . .... .... ... ......................... ..... .. ... ... ... ... .. . ....>
Thus pushing all the planets and stars in one direction towards the center of the universe. (Cute little hypothesis isn't it?)
The reason why we might think our universe is growing is because we could be this (.) planet seeing all our neighbors being pushed away.
> . . . . (.) .... .... ... ......................... ..... .. ... ... ... ... .. . ....>
And like you said, "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction" This is true, so the universe will want to work itself back into a stable position. Just like the balls on the strings, it will slow down but not without moving the other balls.

THUS,
We may NEVER be able to tell where the center of our universe may be.
If each little universe blobs keep hitting each other, then our universes may never be still, and won't give us an accurate report.
Try measuring still and moving jello. GL.

If the universe is "infinite", every point in it is the "center". :loopy

the question defies any logical thinking i can see...

the universe is infinate? how? if the big bang is correct, and its expanding, then it cant be infinate....

but if it isnt infinate, it has to "end" somewhere. how does it end? how do you expand into a perfect vaccuum? in a perfect vaccuum, wouldnt the universe have already expanded infinately... as there is nothing stopping it?

I heard that instead of 11 or 3 dimensions that there is actually only 4. Length, width, height, time.

i reckon the first question on everybodies mind is how is everything, anything. Like the big bang, all the mass or whatever in the universe was all together, well who the hell put it there, i know this is weird cos i kno i am here i exists, well i think i do kno, but i can't get my head around how anything got here, it is hard for me to imagine how something is just there, not nothing,

I'd like to make a few points, here, if I can.

First, time is not really a dimension. It's something that man made up to organize his life.
Second, from what I've read, the universe is expanding, but its expansion is slowing down. How fast it's slowing down, how fast it was expanding before, and when will it stop expanding? I don't know.
Lastly, while I'm sure it's possible to speculate the center of the universe based on what we know of the dimensions (and assuming, for the sake of finding its center, that the universe only has three), but we simply can't tell how far the universe extends in each direction.

I believe TrongaMonga stated it best in his answers.
Because I don't want to repeat all what is saidm if you want to know what I believe, just read the 2nd post of this topic.

I heard somewhere that if something moves faster than the speed of light, its mass would be infite, at least hypothetically. Maybe the 'edges' of the universe accelerate at the speed of light, which would explain how the universe is allegedly infinite...
This is a deep topic...

First of all, it has been scientifically proven that the universe is expanding. Bodies such as galaxies can be measured with redshift and blueshift (moving further away and closer, respectively). Everything outside of our galaxy has a redshift, and the further the distance, the larger the redshift (Hubble's Law, which is as well proven as Newton's Laws).

That doesn't mean that there is a center, infact, it proves there isn't a center. Space is expanding equally at all points, not away from a specific one, as proven by Hubble's Law. It acts more like every point in the universe is the center, rather than any single one.

Also, as for the fate of the universe, there are three possible outcomes. You have to take the average mass density of the entire universe (we'll call X), and the critial value needed to maintain an equilibrium (we'll call Y; this value is indeterminate). Now, Z = X/Y. The three possible outcomes:

If Z<1, then the outcome will be the Big Chill. The universe will continue expanding forever, becoming increasingly thinner. Eventually, all galaxies' gases will be spread too thin to create new stars, and old stars will die. The universe will be entirely extinguished of all light and heat.

If Z>1, then the outcome will be the Big Crunch. The universe will reach a maximum size, and begin collapsing in on itself at the same rate it was expanding prior. Eventually, it will reach a point of infinite temperature and infinite density. This theory is normally associated with the Big Bang (After the Big Crunch, there is a Big Bang, starting the process over again. If this is the outcome that will happen, it is likely it has happened innumerable times before in a cyclic pattern).

If Z=1, the outcome will be that the rate of expansion will slow and coast infinitely towards the point of equilibrium. There will be no Big Chill or Big Crunch, the universe will simply expand at a rate which can be graphed by an exponential function. This is the most supported theory of the three (inflation hypothesis and other data backs it up), although some scientists think it was created simply by our desire to believe the universe won't one day extinguish any life that may still exist.

That answers all the questions I saw. In case it isn't obvious.. I like cosmology >.<
