| WWII: What would happen if USSR kept going West What WOULD happen, think of the Cold war, but with actual fighting. They actual controlled most of Europe.

| I think if the USSR had moved West then we would've employed our nucleur weapons, them theirs, and Cuba would've been thrown into the mix somewhere. Point in case, it didn't happen, so dont' dwell of what could've been, live in what has become.

| nope. if the thread dies itll do so on its own :]
if russia had continued pushing west the cold war wouldnt be a cold war.. it would be a real war with america vrs russia. and remember, we had better nuclear techknoledgy for awhile before the russians started building up and matching us. we could put them down before they could do anything(if we decided to use nukes), or if we engaged in a traditional war im not sure what would happen. i dont think anyone wanted another war on the scale of world war two just a few years after hitler went down...
i think the cold war was really the only way we were going to go. no one wanted to start another world war, and when the russians started matching us tech wise, no one wanted nuked.

| Soviets would never push west, we were pretty much happy with what we already got from the war and Stalin was no full in politics, he knew that Americans had nukes (before americans even announced to him that they had nukes) and he knew that Nukes were too much powerful of a weapon and it would be used by americans. Russia at that point was at the beggining of a long road to recovery. Fact that it had strongest infantry troops and tank divisions at the time wouldn't help against nukes. Plus Stalin knew that Americans wouldn't attack USSR without provocation, at that point there was a time of some what good feelings between two nations. Up until USSR developed its nukes and could now openly oppose US on the world arena, that was in 1949. After that WW2 sped up, there was a blockade of Berlin, then the air lift by americans, then the anti-communist covert operations of US in countries like Egypt, and some countries in Latin America.
Plus USSR had no reason to push forward, we have regainned all of territory that we lost in WW1, plus added a lot of new territories. Also even if we took over everything in Europe ending up with France then we wouldn't be able to feed them. Basically further invasion was not an option.

| The cold war was primarily 2 world powers being paranoid, I doubt any major conflict could have broke out, althought it did come close to happening. If it did, however, the outcome would have depended on how early they started fighting. |
