| Minny, that's an American site, so, you kinda ruined everything
Punk basicly said it all, you can't say that the American Education System sucks because you don't know if Russia has a part on Europe or not.
I don't think anyone in any country ever learns that. I knew that for my own. Who actually cares if Moscow is in Europe, or not. It is an Asian country, because a really big most of it is in Asia.
mesiahofpenguins, asking someone if your educational system is good without using proper grammar and ponctuation won't take you anywhere...
The thing I think Americans should really change is the measurement system, that, I agree. Because it will avoid accidents like the ones that already happened in some rockets. Don't know if you guys know, but when NASA scientists make the calculations, they use the metric system (the international science system), and when they order the parts to American companies, they have to convert it. And, sometimes, they just blow the hell out of the rocket because of one slight mistake. |

| Thank you Bongo, you took the words right out of my mouth Which is exactly what I was trying to get to Kuzmich last night.
We say it's an asian country because...well...it is. Why not say that those US providences closer to Cuba and Mexico aren't Mexican? Because they part of a bigger country. I know that isn't really the same beings it is split over countries instead of continents, but still. Kinda like saying Alaska is part of Canada
I know the US education system is garbage, but that doesn't make us stupid. We learn most of our information from other sources, at least I have.
As far as the Metric system, we still use SAE because it is something that all americans already know very well and use. No reason to change something that works. BUT, that doesn't mean that we don't know metric. Every american is required to have an understanding of that system as well before they can graduate. And while metric is easier to negate, it's still not what we have grown up seeing. If you come to america and look around in some states, they give exits on the freeway with both SAE and metric conversions, so it's not like we completely disregard the system.

just read through the rest of the thread and i am actually surprised to hear that the metric system is even mentioned in american schools.

As for us learning metric in school, why be surprised? We still use it much more than you think. We use CM in our rulers, we use meter sticks, and a lot of things we measure in metric instead of SAE. Some things are easier some ways, some things are easier in others.
-Edit-
Kuzmich, you really make a big deal out of such trivial things...I've already told you what I believe in the geographical location of Russia, and I even reiterated it in this thread. Allow the "stupid" kids to think what they want .gif) That's what makes the smart people smarter.

| But can you show with your hands how big one meter is? I mean do you have an understanding of how big is a meter, or how heavy is a killogram?

| No, but can you show how big an inch is with your fingers? I can measure inches by eye, and I can meazure ounces using my hand (poor drug knowlege =/) Speaking of drug knowlege, there are a lot of dealers who know EXACTLY how heavy a kilogram is .gif) Sadly, I can measure a gram with my hand too =/

| america is turning towards metric.. in school i havent been taught anything about our standard system for years. i know metric better than our standard system. in all science classes HUGE emphasis is put on the metric system. dont give me this bullshit about america being too patriotic to use metric or something.
the only reason most americansxaremore familiar with the standard system is coz we learned it first, before school from our parents. i use miles, inches and feet, gallon, but thats all i really know of our standard system.
i use the metric for science coz its 10 times easier to do math with. standard system is just how we talk (go up the road for about 5 miles then youll see the placeon the left... im 6 foot tall ect.)
for anything more detailed i use metric coz its more math freindly

| My dealings with the US education system have indeed been bullshit. I don't think anecdotal evidence has much of a place in debate though.

But getting away from that arguement, our primary schooling is pretty crappy, unless you go to a magnet school. Our university system is quite strong tho. |

Anyways what do you think about education in US? | its crap?
i was talking with my grandma the other day and she said that the schools in the town that she lived in were given an satlike test last fall over essentials they should know.(these are 2nd graders, forgot to say) well anyways, just about all the kids failed and the people that gave the tests went back and went through what the kids were taught, they were taught about diversity...what the hell!? i mean its good and all to tolerate other peoples but the kids still need to learn about essentials.
basically
everyone should be homeschooled.

...
thats not how my friends were homeschooled they had textbooks that public school kids had and would go in a few times a week to get help if need be. One of them live on a farm...yet at their sophomore year, my senior year work seems pathetic...im take precalc, they take calc...its kind of annoying, especialy since they only have school for like 3 hours on average
