Political correctness gone awry - conviction in racial hatred case

Brigitte Bardot guilty in racial hatred case - Celebrities - MSNBC.com
Quote:
PARIS - Brigitte Bardot was convicted Tuesday of provoking discrimination and racial hatred for writing that Muslims are destroying France.

A Paris court also handed down a $23,325 fine against the former screen siren and animal rights campaigner. The court also ordered Bardot to pay $1,555 in damages to MRAP.
She's a bit of a lunatic in general, but this is what you get when political correctness stifles freedom of speech. Just because she's speaking against a minority, it doesn't make it a breach of civil rights.

I'd like to see what she wrote and what evidence she had before I pass "judgement", although I can't find the letter she wrote to Sarkozy anywhere (not surprised). It is, however, her fifth offence for inciting racial hatred.*

The most I've seen of the actual letter is what is in the article, "[France is] tired of being led by the nose by this population that is destroying us, destroying our country by imposing its acts."

That being said, it doesn't matter whether or not you agree with her, it is the fact that she is being convicted for speaking her mind. She's no more extreme than hardcore member of PETA. Granted, I'd put their ideas as boarding crazy, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have the right to spread them and attempt to persuade others.

The fact is, most countries aren't as fanatical about protecting freedom of speech as the United States. In the case of France, and I believe most of Europe, their experiences in World War 2 definitely shaped their priorities. For them, racial harmony and projecting an image of a nation that vigorously protects the livelihoods of minority ethnic groups are more important than protecting the rights of people to create racial tension.

It seems more like every other country finds the goal of not offending people is more important than free speech - as if silencing one side in a legitimate debate is actually accomplishing something. But it's becoming more and more widespread. The same general thing is going on next door in Canada (source). It's not so much that it's happening that worries me the most, but that it is spreading and even here it is starting to gain traction.

Hmm, I can relate to this, every time I go back to Moscow now there are tons and tons of new foreign people walking the streets that weren't there before. Like 40% of Moscow is populated by immigrants now, many Muslims and Caucasus peoples are flooding the streets. Are they destroying Russia? Hell yeah same way as I am sure that Muslim immigrants are destroying France. I do not have anything against Muslims on their racial background but I do have something against them on just the way they behave, they're too bloody arrogant. They come into a country, most of the time illegally and then they make it out to be that they are doing you a favor that they came here? And that you owe them something? That's then I get that seeking feeling in my chest that means that anger is soon to follow. And then we got the Albanians of course, who come into your country, start breeding and then claim that they are the ethnic population of your country because there is so many of them now and they tell you to give up your land. This is issue is sensitive as far as the liberals are concerned and thus hard to deal with, yes all men are created equal, however that doesn't mean that some men are not ***holes on a cultural level.
