| It depends on the average person. Does the average person just suck at spelling or is his typing causes a lot of errors?
Quite a lot of stupid mistakes nowadays are due to the advent of text-messaging which involves rather simplified language. In Malaysia, there are horrendous cases where SMS-talk is being put into essays and slang being put into formal texts!
However, I think it is a little iffy to say that the spell-checker makes you spell bad. If anything, it makes people realise that the spelling of a word is wrong and hence they will mentally change that. If they get it wrong again, it becomes embedded much stronger. If all goes wrong, then the spell-checker will keep correcting it.
However, I do think that this is unhealthy because to rely on a computer has quite a lot of implications. Literacy is rather vital and spell-checkers force employers to discriminate at other things. But if it gets things done, does it really matter?
I'm not in this position. I type really fast and that is the source of my errors - not the lack of spelling problems.* |
