Civil War

Our nation is wholely and completely divided, highlighted by the fact that even Christmas is classified as a war now.

Given this vehelment disagreement, does anyone think there lies a possibility for another civil war in our future?

Would such a civil war be beneficial to society in the long run, given our current state of affairs?

I am always of the opinion that a new civil war is bound to occur and that war is bad. However, people are starting to question even the things we take for granted. To me, this should be left for scientists - but people, heck, make a big deal about everything.*

As for bloodshed on a scale that of our first civil war I do not think for one minute. Christ sakes we are a very rich nation of elites. We fight battles in court rooms and congress. Sure, there is blood on the street e.g. gang wars but as for little Johnny Smith is concerned the only "gun" he cares about is the one he's about the blow the head off of the enemy in some video game.

Well, to have a civil war, you need a problem that cannot be articulated by the current social institutions, for a reason or another. I dont really know of such problem as of now. Our social institutions, in the West, are capable of dealing with any sort of problem for the moment.

Secondly, you need a minimum of two parties that are alienated from each other to the point where the tension building caused by the insoluble problem can lead to an armed conflict. And, as of now, I dont know of such factions capable of lauching an armed conflict, because they dont have the will to, or the material and political means to do so.

Though our country is divided on several issues we have the correct social institutions to deal with such a problem.

For a civil war to occur in this country, we would first have to pull our forces out of Iraq. Once that happens(hopefully in the near future) I can't really think of an issue strong enough to launch a civil war.

What do you mean by "Christmas is classified as a war now"? I fail to see how a holiday is a war. If you mean that because some people celebrate it and some don't...which is absurd...then abortion is a war, gay marraige is a war, and so is every issue that people disagree on(aka every issue ever.)

Well, that is assuming it would be a race war. I feel the north and south have no real conflict other than most southerns are war buffs.

Nah, that will never happen a civil war is bad for business, not like a war in a foreign country. The corporations controlling the US government will never allow a US civil war to happen, for one thing they'll make the very combination of words "Civil War" their trademark and sue anyone who says it publicly. On a more serious note, really, there is no way in hell there is going to be a civil war its a different time and there is no issue like slavery that had one part of the country divided from the other in such unison as slavery did in the American civil war in the 19th century. Don't worry though, there'll be bloodshed, the days of American Empire are coming to an end, the Chinese sons of bitches are moving in.

america still has the majority of the worlds wealth. they wont lose it anytime soon. and i highly doubt that an issue that is so intense in nature will pop up that a civil war starts.

As a scientist-in-training, let me clarify what exactly it is a scientist does... A scientist observes, gathers data, analyses it, and then draws a conclusion. Real scientists do not go on ahead and tell you what you should be doing, but rather what would happen if (hypothetical scenario) happened. That is why its so damn hard to get a straight answer from any serious researcher scientist, as s/he will 99% of the time give you an 'it depends' answer. That being said, it is very dangerous to take the word of experts (you know, the ones we see on TV, not necessarily scientists, but economists, new age gurus, diet and fitness instructors) without a grain of salt. Sometimes we need to stop listening to experts (especially the ones who specifically tell us what to do) and make up our own minds.

True. The last Gulf War raked in billions of dollars in profits for US oil companies, as heightened insecurity in the Middle East caused the price of oil to skyrocket. No doubt that in the coming years of economic analysis we will also find that this Gulf War (a.k.a. the iRaq war) has also resulted in favourable economic outcomes for the large American oil multinationals as well as defence contractors.

As to whether there will be civil war or not, this depends on whether the system is flexible enough to accommodate the will of the people, or whether big money from the corpos and the lobbies win out. If the general public find that the system cannot accommodate their needs enough, they may turn to violent means to have their voices heard. Remember, the US has not declared war since WWII, and Congress has preferred to call war 'authorised use of force' and, in the case of Iraq, the civil war is referred to an 'insurgency'. No doubt that if a civil war were to start in the US it would be (at first) referred to as an 'insurgency', and that civil war would not even be acknowledged at all until well into the conflict.
