Becuase tolkien basically created an alternate universe using that mythology in case you didnt know theres more than just lotr he did giving each race a written and spoken language and chronilogical history. not to mention he did this around the time gyrax was being born. to say he didnt have a hand in how we look at rpgs today would be a shame
