you seem to be an intelligent person, one of very few in these forums.
what you wrote is true metal is a non-renewable resource, however it is extremely recyclable, and in canada particularly in new brunswick we are fairly big into recycling even going so far as sorting our garbage at home.
i not to familiar with the states but up here most people i know don't even carry money, everyone uses interac.
