I see string theory as yet another theory, paralleling yet every other theory meant to explain the universe's construction. I, myself, am skeptical about the existence of either sparticles or dark matter to explain all the stuff out there we can't see. Too much time and effort is haphazardly thrown into all of these highly unorthodox theories... we could be spending more of our resources on more important matters, like the colonization of the moon and Mars. At times like these, where science programs are having their funding cut left and right, we need to start allocating the time and money that we have and focusing on what we need done and discovered rather than what we want done and discovered. Let's say that we discover that everything in the universe is, in fact, composed of tiny strings. That'd be great. Yet, as interesting as such a discovery would be, it wouldn't be enough to keep astronauts sane on their expedition to Mars. And if we don't start expanding soon, we're going to run out of minerals and gas and then we'll be completely screwed.
