| The law says that anyone below the age of consent cannot make judgements like these for themselves... The law is there to protect them. In other words, if a 14-year-old girl says she wants to have sex with a 60-year-old man, then her word is worth nothing. Consent, if anything, may only lessen the sentence put onto the other person in the eyes of the jury.
So are paedophiles being treated harshly? No. As "mature" adults, they should know that they should only mess with adults and not those who are still deemed innocent.*
